Hawthorn supposedly created by thunor in a bolt of lightning, was said to protect against lightning, storms at sea, and unwanted wights. It could also keep witches spells at bay. It was said to keep women looking youthful, and was one of the nine woods used in funeral pyres. The flowers and berries was once used as a cough syrup, and the flowers soaked in wine were once given to ease stomach pain. Hawthorne berries were good for general circulation and Stabilizing blood pressure problems.
Hawthorn was used to increase fertility, although the leaves placed beneath the mattress would enforce or maintain chastity. It was also used as a love charm, particularly if that love was unrequited. Carrying hawthorn in a sachet on a fishing trip ensures a good catch, and is said to promote happiness in the sad or depressed.
